The seven sacred
ceremonies were given to Native American peoples by White Buffalo Calf Woman. She
gave them the chanupah (sacred pipe), the songs, the proper procedures and
the meaning for each ceremony. She also gave them a small stone with
seven circles on it--one for each
ceremony.
Willard was
taught these ceremonies and prayed with the actual sacred bundle
which contains all these revered objects. He lived in the bridge of
time between the ancient and the modern. He
learned from the elders whose elders had been at the Little Big Horn.
He saw much disappointment and the
invasion of his homeland by the immigrants from Europe. Like
most reservation bound Native Americans he felt abused and disrespected,
but his love for the land and his people made him a fighter who never
stopped hoping for a better world, a world where people would respect and
love Mother Earth, honor and respect each other and work together as a
universal family. He knew many people wanted to know the “Indian Way”,
the ceremonies, and the philosophy. He
felt compelled to teach the good red road of life.
He and I were going to make another
program to continue his teachings but my friend, my uncle, and
my teacher went on to the spirit world.
It makes me feel good to
hear his teachings, his songs, and
his wisdom. Please
respect these Native American ways, adhere to his instructions, share in the
sacred way, and walk on the good red
road in this good way. The circle of life begins with love--we
receive this first teaching from our Mother. Next
we learn respect--we learn this from
our Father. Next
we learn discipline--we learn this
from our uncles and aunts. Lastly
we learn wisdom--we learn this from
our elders.
Open your heart to this
elder, Spotted Buffalo, who walked on the good red road,
a’ho-metakya-oyisin!
