These light stage wagons carried loads over roads too dangerous for the less rugged Concord coaches.  They were called "mud wagons" because of their dependability during inclement weather.  Normally, both the Concords and the stage wagons were pulled by six horses; the teams were replaced at each stage station, usually spaced about every twelve miles.
